February picked up right where January left off and was a very busy month. We sold a bunch of Silver Age Marvels from the usual suspects (Amazing Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Avengers,  Strange Tales, Journey Into Mystery,  X-Men, Sgt. Fury, etc.) as well as the Bronze titles we have had a lot of success moving (Avengers,  FF, ASM, Thor, Captain America, Doctor Strange, X-Men, Iron Man, Incredible Hulk) and some lesser known, esoteric ones (Chamber of Chills, Journey Into Mystery (vol. 2),  Marvel Triple Action,  Fear, War is Hell, Warlock, Uncanny Tales). The most surprising title we sold, however, which encompasses both ages, is Captain Marvel, the focus of this month’s report. 

 

On Wednesday, February 16th, we began listing (over two nights) the recently certified, 9.2 and better run of Captain Marvel from the underrated Winnipeg Collection. I had acquired the run back in 1996 when the Winnipegs first became available and knew it was an overlooked and underappreciated title. I decided to keep them as part of my collection and never really entertained thoughts of parting with the run until I had sold on the site a few scattered issues (#’s 3, 5, 30, & 34) in January. In all, 23 issues came back from the CGC in the pre-screened grade of 9.2 or higher, with 10 in 9.2, 9 in Near Mint 9.4 and 4 in 9.6. The books were very clean and fresh copies and had the characteristic gloss and page quality that has helped make the Winnipegs an accepted and sought after pedigree. Incredibly, half the books sold after the two day listing, all of these going to a high grade collector who loves the title. He started by purchasing only a few but the lure of the pedigree got the better of him (he already had high grade CGC copies) and he bought a bunch more (11 in total). Only a few days later, one other high grade collector (who had never purchased or collected Captain Marvels before) scooped up all the rest.
It was definitely the fact that the run was a pedigree one that fueled the sales. And, as far as Bronze Age pedigrees go, the Winnipegs are second to none, especially when considering the overall quality of the books (average grade of 9.6 with off-white to white or white pages) and quantity (full runs of every major title). Even at fairly high multiples (the books were incredibly cheap in the Guide) starting at 3x on the 9.2’s, these beauties had no problem finding a new home.    

 

Again, although I was surprised at how quickly this relatively non-mainstream title sold, I wasn’t shocked. Pedigrees sell, folks, especially high grade pedigree books, and there are a number of buyers out there who realize this and will jump at the opportunity to get in on one at the ground floor.
