Description
Offered here is the absolute holy grail of the horror and magazine genre: the legendary 1965 Eerie #1 ashcan. Originally rushed into production by James Warren in a micro-run of just 200 copies to legally lock down the title trademark against rival Eerie Publications, this elusive issue ranks among the most coveted, high-profile keys in entire comic book history. Because it never saw formal newsstand distribution—with the regular series launching directly into issue #2 the following year—original copies are virtually nonexistent in the open marketplace, making this an elite tier acquisition for the most advanced investment collection.
True originals can be identified by very specific physical quirks and printing flaws:
Page 3 Roof Shingle Test - On a genuine, first-printing ashcan copy, the fine ink lines forming the shingles on the roof are completely sharp, distinct, and solid. PLEASE COMPARE THIS COPY (images #2 and #3) WITH THE COPY TAKEN FROM THE CGC BOARDS (image #8) that was identified by Jim Warren in his letter (image #7) as an original copy.
Page 18 Ink Blot Test: On page 18, panel 5, a true first printing has exceptionally poor ink quality. The figure of a bald-headed man completely blends out, disappearing entirely into a heavy, solid black background. Many counterfeits are printed from cleaner secondary plates where the bald man's outline remains distinctly visible. PLEASE COMPARE THIS COPY (images #4 and #5) WITH THE COPY TAKEN FROM THE CGC BOARDS (image #9). The bald man cannot be seen in either image.
An original measures exactly 5 ¼ inches wide by 7 ¼ inches high, featuring a precise and completely even factory trim. This copy has those measurements.
THE FIRST SIX IMAGES ARE OF THE BOOK THAT IS UP FOR BIDS.
The last three are to authenticate this copy.
GRADE: The book does show a small amount of rust on the top of both staples. Internally, the staple rust shows somewhat to a higher degree. There are a several ticks along the spine. Book appears perfectly centered. Paper quality is off-white to white. Overall, a conservative VF/NM.
